What Does God Think Of The Golden Compass?

Dear God,

I recently read in The Baltimore Sun that The Catholic League is trying to force Scholastic Books to censor all works by Philip Pullman, the author of The Golden Compass, which is about to be released as a movie. In reaction to this attempt at the suppression of ideas, a reader of the Baltimore Sun recently wrote,

“This is exactly the objection that Phillip Pullman expresses in his novels: The censorship of ideas and opinions that organized religion feels justified in perpetrating in the name of God. Has anyone bothered to ask God what He thinks ? Cos I thought we were here to excercise free will, and make choices… I like my choices to be informed ones. We all have that right.”

Well, God, what do you think of The Golden Compass?

Armand,

It all reminds me of how the Catholic Church has attempted to suppress the ideas of Galileo. That didn’t work out too well for the church. They threatened Galileo with death, and put him under house arrest for the rest of his life, and yet, Galileo’s ideas have become so widely acknowledged that even the Catholic Church has had to admit that it, supposedly infallible, was wrong and Galileo was right.

My advice to Scholastic Books is that they encourage The Catholic League to go on ranting and raving. It’s making a lot of people want to go out and buy the book.

I really don’t understand what the fuss is all about. The Golden Compass is a work of fiction, just like the Bible.

I actually liked the book, The Golden Compass. It was entertaining and provocative. It’s too bad that The Catholic League didn’t ask me my opinion before going out and speaking in my name. The truth is that I don’t mind being criticized, when the criticism is intelligently done. Do you know how boring it is having everyone telling you what they think you want to hear all the time?

Let me make this clear: The Catholic League does not speak for me. Go out and get a copy of The Golden Compass to read over the weekend, and when the movie comes out in theatres in the second week of December, go to see it.

Some people are saying you have to actually try something yourself before you can judge its value. I notice you are recommending this book. Have you actually read the trilogy and is it Kosher to recommend something you haven’t tried yourself?

Uh, I don’t think you actually listened to this video. In it, I clearly state that I have read the book many times.

Are you actually commenting on this video without listening to it?

Oh, dear god no, I can’t even see the video. I thought you knew that. This one comes up and says it is missing some vital piece of Quicktime software, as usual. If I let it load for a half hour or so, I would probably get the audio…Some of them I can’t access at all, but have been lucky enough to catch them on youtube. They are a lot of fun to listen to, and uh, spiritually uplifting and all that, but still they take forever to load, so I only put them on if I’m going to be home for a while doing something else. I’m a visual learner anyhow, like 80% of the population, so I mostly just read the transcripts.

Is that your Golden Compass Critter in the background? I tried to get one of those Critters, because I heard they come with a soul and you can never have too many of those, but I couldn’t access it on their website. Crashed my system several times, even stopped the clock and I had to power it off and start over. I think maybe the Devil is in that website.

I already have a Purple Dingo Critter from the Ralpharian ‘Way Institute, which, don’t you think means a lot more than a computer-generated one? Still, I don’t know if the Purple Dingo has a soul. They say adults only have one Critter, but I’m a Gemini so I’m fairly sure I could handle at least two.

Are you insinuating that the Video Of God is in some way insufficient? Why don’t you pray on it?

  • 33447. Iroquois 27 November 2007 at 3:05 pm

If i pray for broadband and a Pentium dual core laptop, what do you think would happen? Would I see God?

Aren’t you going to post your daemon, or doesn’t God get one?

[…] It turns out that God is actually a big fan of The Golden Compass, and has personally endorsed the book. […]

Actually, the power of prayer is overrated. It’s kind of like signing one of those online petitions to the President of the United States. An elf comes to me with a summary of all the prayers of the day once every morning, or just prepares a report for me if I’m on vacation, so that I can look at it briefly when I get back. It’s my way of getting a general sense of what people want.

Don’t expect an answer, any more than you would expect a response from the President of the United States.

As for my daemon, well, I can have a daemon of any form that I want. Sometimes it’s a human being, like Krishna or Jesus. Sometimes it’s a monkey, like Hanuman. Once, it was a winged serpent, in Central America. In the Pacific islands, my daemon has sometimes been a giant eel, or a big coconut.

You think about it, and my daemon can be that shape.

It seems some of the Irregular characters have disappeared from the blogosphere. Did you finally smite them?

  • 33913. CS 6 December 2007 at 1:21 am

You people are crazy! What kind of religion stays in power by ensuring that you all live in fear-that is no way to live. It’s pathetic.

  • 33964. God 6 December 2007 at 10:51 am

No, I would never smite the blogosphere. If you smite the blogosphere, then little pieces it come rippling off from the impact, and you get little blogs all over you. It’s very messy.

My guess is that they’re having a server problem. It’s so hard to get good servants these days.
